Seit 2017 ist das IKEM zudem als Nichtregierungsorganisation beim Wirtschafts- und Sozialrat der Vereinten Nationen (ECOSOC) anerkannt. Als An-Institut der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald wird das Institut von Prof. Dr. Michael Rodi, M.A. und von Simon Schäfer-Stradowsky geleitet.
